The biggest surprise, though, was Amelia Earhart, who was here the first four days. She is the most amazing person―just as tremendous as C., I think. It startles me how much alike they are in breadth. C. dosen't realize it, but he hasn't talk to her as much. She has the clarity of mind, impersonal eye, coolness of temperament, balance of a scientist. Aside from that, I like her.

　
邦訳『輝く時、失意の時』だと1929年1月の日付になっているが誤植だろう。

　でも、一番びっくりしたのは、アミーリア・エアハートで、彼女はここに最初の４日間いたの。彼女は最高に驚異の人。チャールズと同じくらいに素晴らしいと、私は思うの。その度量の広さでは、彼等があまりに似ているので、私はびっくりしてしまいます。チャールズは、それに気付いていないの。でも、彼女とそれほど話していないから……。彼女の頭脳は明晰で、感情を交えない目を持っていて、冷静な気質、科学者の平衡感覚を持っているのよ。とにかく、私は彼女が好きだわ。

「アミーリア・エアハート」という表記から想像されるが、邦訳出版の1997年当時はまだ日本でほとんど知られていなかったのだろう。この本は人名の注釈が充実しているのだが、彼女に関しては何も記されていない。

例えば古代の遺跡から珍しい遺物が発見されたというような記事で最初に写真が出されて、その下に「写真はイメージです」と小さくあるやつ。
本物の写真が見たいから記事開いたんだよ。

原書の HOUR OF GOLD, HOUR OF LEAD と邦訳の『輝く時、失意の時』では収録されている写真に違いがある。原書の方が枚数が多いが逆に邦訳にしかない写真もある。
この写真は邦訳の方にはない。初めて見る写真だ。
二人は面識はあったんだな。
1930年1月、アメリア・イアハートが33歳、アン・モロウ・リンドバーグが24歳くらいの写真か。

Mother darling―
Tomorrow early we leave for Nanking. I'll never catch up in letters. I wanted to tell about the unofficiai things in.Tokyo. The fun I've had with Mrs. Neville, wife of an Embassy staff member, in having a lesson in Japaneses garden-making, in flower arrangement and it's philosophy, a visit to the museum, being told about the tea ceremony by the very charming and cultured curator. Mother, please get and read in half an evening The Book of Tea, by Okakura Kakuzo. It is the essence of the Japanese philosophy. To read this and and also to learn it from some of the people I've met here has been most thrilling thing to me about this trip.
　And then a morning through a park, where we watched the little boys chasing dragonflies with bamboo poles (stickum on the end) and crickets that they catch and sell in the stores for music (like canaries!). I have written down a very poignant poem told me about a mother whose boy is dead. It runs over and over in my mind.

How far in chace today,
I wonder, has gone my hunter
Of dragonfly ?

　
手紙は1931年9月、博多の共進亭ホテルから母のエリザベス・カッター・モロウに宛てたもの。
岡倉覚三の『茶の本』に感銘を受けたというのは North To The Orient にはあったか。
あと最後に紹介されている a very poignant poem というのは加賀の千代女の句で1935年の North To The Orient にもあるのだが、幼子を失った母の言葉であるから私はてっきり1932年の誘拐殺人事件を経験したアンが後に記したものかと思っていた。
